One thing I’ve always enjoyed about being in the wine industry is the ability to taste new wines before anybody else, and I’m not just talking about the wine you make yourself. Quite often we have the priveledge of being some of the first to taste new vintages and, even new brands. Sometimes, right off the bottling line. Yesterday I was lucky enough get my hands on a bottle of the brand new 2008 Mountadam Sauvingon Blanc Semillon, that happend to be bottled that morning.
Mountadam winemaker Con Moshos is best known for making cracking Chardonnays, Rieslings, and Shiraz. Making great Sauvignon Blanc is something even he admits he is still grasping. However it does give you a head start when you can source Sauvingon Blanc grapes from the Mount Lofty Ranges in Adelaide Hills of South Australia. Since 1972, Mountadam has pioneered cool climate elegant, fruit focussed wines from the Mount Lofty Ranges.
We have not been dissappointe
d. This is an elegant yet powerful Sauvingon Blanc Semillon
Alcohol: 13.5%
Blokes Notes: The 2008 Mountadam Sauvignon Blanc Semillon shows lovely fresh, crisp characters of spice on the nose, with a hint of melon and some passionfruit. What I like most though is the fantastic mouthfeel that has a great balance between acid sharpness and softness of structure. It’s a very round, elegant style, that shows great depth of flavour.
This wine will surely match the other Adelaide Hills heavyweights such as Shaw & Smith and Bridgewater Mill. Although Mountadam aren’t traditionally known for SBS, and probably would rather focus on their Chardonnay, Riesling, and Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc may well become prominent.
Moshos indicated he prefers wines of this style that show the subtle citrus and floral notes of Semillon. He’s right.
