So named in commemoration of the year that Samual McWilliams planted his first vines at Corowa. 1877 is lovingly hand crafted each vintage from the best fruit available to McWilliams. The majority of Cabernet and Merlot are sourced from old vines grown to the celebrated Laira property in the Coonawarra, the Shiraz from original vines on the Barwang Vineyard. Real claret with a hint of Rhone, in seamless blockbuster styling, only McWilliams have the skill and resources to weave such a pure wine from a complex tapestry of fruit! -Case4Claret.com Coonawarra Hilltops Barossa Yarra The Laira Vineyard was established 1893 in Coonawarra s famous Terra rossa heartland. The climes around McWilliams Barwang are often likened to the southern Rhone, where the vines yield distinctive, spicy, peppery Shiraz. 1877 represents a no expense spared approach by McWilliams. The best and boldest parcels of fruit are selected and pressed off skins early, to allow a short period of barrel fermentation in new French oak. The juices complete primary fermentations and malolactic in barrel to increase the richness of the wine and to achieve complexity. 1877 remains in barrel for a period of twenty four months for oak maturation, treated once or twice to an occassional rack and return. Approx 14.5% Colour is a deep brick red with crimson hues. An intensely aromatic wine with dark chocolate, blackberry and spicy fruit flavours combined with complex cigar box, coffee bean and cinnamon oak. A masculine, concentrated palate with rich blackberry, aniseed and ripe plum fruit flavours combined with complex French oak chararcters of pencil shaving and brown spice. An immense, powerful palate that remains very balanced between the dark, ripe fruit and generous oak. The tannins are robust and long lived to allow for an extended period of ageing.
