‘Wine Name: Shiraz Viognier Vintage: 2007 Wine Style: Medium-bodied red wine Grape Variety: 91% Shiraz; 6% Viognier; 3% Other Winemaker: Kim Horton Region: Frankland River, Western Australia Winemakers NotesColour: Crimson red. Bouquet: Lively nose of lifted musk sticks, blueberry and dark plums. Palate: Intense palate with fleshy and mouthfilling characters of black plums, licorice and blackberry. Viognier adds complexity and the finish is long and fine. Cellaring Potential: Drink now or cellar for up to 5 years. Vinification: 2007 vintage is best remembered for being warm and dry. Grapes were harvested up to 4 weeks earlier than normal and yields were far lower than expected due to smaller berries. The fruit was crushed to static fermenters where the Shiraz and Viognier were allowed to co-ferment giving the best integration between the two varieties. Viognier has given the wine a distinct musk lift whilst the palate retains the richness of the Shiraz. The two were fermented at moderate temperatures for 8 days prior to pressing and draining to mature European oak. Winemakers Comments: Co-fermentation of Shiraz and Viognier is a style popularised in the Rhone of France for its ability to add aromatic high notes, a savoury edge and a restrained palate, making it an ideal blend for meals. Ferngrove ferments the varieties together to dryness, draining into European oak for the completion of malo-lactic fermentation, adding texture and richness, while retaining the elegance of the blend.
