Burgundy Tasting - Tuesday 22nd January 2008, Bridgewater, South Australia

To many wine consumers around the world, no other wine or wine region holds so much prestige and want than that of Burgundy. Some of the most famous wines in the world are produced in Burgundy, and so it is that many also come with a hefty prce tag.

Paul of The Wine Blokes worked a vintage in Burgundy in 2001, and we decided to taste a white Burgundy from that from that producer, and also a red Burgundy from near by.

Wine Bloke Tasters: Jono & Paul

Wine#1:

2000 Cote De Nuit-Villages, Premeaux-Prissey, R.Dubois & Fils - Le Monts De Boncour, 13% Alc

General Info: The Côte de Nuits is the northern part of the Cote d’Or, the limestone ridge that is home to the great names of Burgundy wine. It extends from Dijon to just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, which gives its name to the district and is the regional centre. Though some white and rosé wines are produced in the region, the Côte de Nuits is most famous for reds made from Pinot Noir.

Nuits-Saint-Georges: The fame of Nuits wine comes from the fact that as the largest town in the region, wine from the better vineyards to the north was sold there. The local wines are most of ‘Villages’ quality, and need longer in the cellar than most Burgundies of similar quality.

Premeaux-Prissey: Wines from Premeaux-Prissey are sold under the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation and as Côte de Nuits Villages.

Tasting Notes:

Pale Straw with slight green tinge. Seriously good hue for 8 year old wine.
Quite buttery nose with hint of menthol. Quite distinct with developed oak character, roundness comes through.

Quite a minerally mouthfeel and citrus middle palate. Nice and round and well structured. Very well integrated. Good balance for 8 year old wine. Slight volatility starting to make an appearance. Little bit of straw, dry grass type tones. All in all a very good white Burdundy that should drink well for the next years.

Wine #2:

2005 Domaine De La Vougeraie, Gevrey Chambertin, 12.5% Alc

General Info: Gevrey-Chambertin has more Grand Crus than any other village, with nine. Chambertin and its extension Chambertin-Clos de Beze are the epitomy of red Burgundy. The other Grand Crus are Mazis-Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyeres-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin, Latricieres-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin.

Tasting Notes: This wine has the typical red berry and strawberry type characters, with sweet oak, well integrated minerallity and acidity. This wine was actually a little tart when first opened, but opened up and softened quite a bit after the first hour or so. It is still a little tight, and not surprising as it’s only 2 years old. Certainly a wine to be put down for 5 years or so.

Can be purchased in Australia from Domain Wine Shippers.
