With tireless promoter Andre Dubosc at the helm since 1979, south-western France's Plaimont winery has risen far above the mass of humdrum co-operatives. He put his astute diplomacy to good use convincing growers to employ environmentally-friendly methods and accept the concept of being paid more to produce less. This is Plaimont's top red cuvée ('Le Faite' means 'the peak'), from the Côtes de Saint-Mont west of Auch, home to a wine tradition started by Benedictine monks in 1050 and recognised as a quality area in 1981. Tannat, Pinenc, Cabernets -Sauvignon and -Franc are the region's red grapes, presented here in smooth, dark, sumptuous, almost liqueur-rich format.
