Quality in Australian wine has never been better - for though the continuing water shortage has resulted in much reduced yields in the vineyards fruit quality has soared with parched vines producing bunches of tiny thick skinned grapes with amazingly concentrated juice. This oak-aged Shiraz from Chateau Mildura is a perfect illustration of the intensely flavoured yet elegant reds that can be found today. Established in 1887 by Canadian brothers George and W B Chaffey Chateau Mildura helped to launch Australia’s wine industry. Located in the fertile farming region of the Mildura Murray Outback the estate is ideally suited to grape-growing providing healthy crops of perfectly sun-ripened grapes. In 2002 Chateau Mildura was purchased by local horticulturist Lance Milne. Lance’s family have lived in the region for generations giving him a real passion for the district’s winemaking heritage. This luxurious red is made purely from Shiraz Australia’s number one grape which thrives in the warm climate producing deeply fruity wines with discreet tannins. Fermentation in open topped potters has helped to produce a really soft textured wine while ageing in oak barrels has added complex notes of cigar tobacco and vanilla to the lush fruit.
