Of the world’s aristocratic red grapes, Pinot Noir is by far the most difficult to grow. Yet it is planted in small quantities all over the world in the hope that somewhere it can get close to the superlative quality of that found in Burgundy … not that it’s always guaranteed in Burgundy. You have to look hard and know your growers! This finicky grape likes to live on the edge - it doesn’t like too hot a climate, prefering one that verges towards the cool, but not too cold. It’s found a second home in New Zealand’s Marlborough and in Oregon in the States and also performs remarkably well on the shores of Lake Balaton in Hungary. We’re not saying that this humbly priced Pinot Noir will have all the frills and subtle nuances of Grand Cru Burgundy, but then, thankfully, it comes at a much more reasonable price. But it does offer lots of the pretty red berry fruit and silky texture that you want from this grape. The wine is from a cellar that was founded in 1956 but, importantly, privatised in 1996 and totally re-equipped with the latest technology and a large barrel hall. Chief winemaker is Gabor Lazcko guided by renowned Australian viticultural consultant, Richard Smart, who has 220 research papers and publications to his name. The fruit for this delicately flavoured red comes from the gentle hillsides of volcanic tufa, which is ideal for viticulture. Four months in barrel has given this wine an extra layer of maturity.
