Monasterio de Tentudia is a Gran Reserva-style wine from the little heard-of region of Extremadura on the western edge of Spain abutting the Portuguese border. It’s one of the most fertile corners of the country supporting cereal cotton olives cork tobacco vines and above all sheep which are said to outnumber people! Although not a household name within our shores Extremadura is Spain’s fourth most important wine region in terms of size. Although traditionally a white wine area it is making its name with red wines which in fact go much better with the local cuisine of lamb the cured ham from the pata negra (black pig - an animal that has one and a half hectares of land for foraging all to itself for five years and is purely fed acorns for the last three months) and the strong cheeses. The wine comes from Vi?a Extreme?a. Founded in the 19th century this cellar claims to be the most awarded bodega in the world. This particular wine has won many medals over the years with a total of 14 for the 1997 and 11 for the 2000 … so far! The 4th generation now runs the three estates each equipped with the very latest in modern technology. This wine is made purely from Tempranillo - the noble grape of Spain best known in the wines of Rioja of course but grown in every corner of Spain. Traditional fermentation was followed by 18 months in oak barrels to give a rich layer of sweetly scented toasty vanilla to the silky Summer berry fruit.
