The Times declared that ”Sicily continues to shine as one of Italy’s star performers”, while the eminent Hugh Johnson was equally full of praise in his ‘World Atlas of Wine’: ”the advent of Sicilian table wine has been spectacular”. Sicily is a large island, the biggest of the Mediterranean in fact and one that can match Australia for output! It had ideal conditions for viticulture - lots of hilly sites with poor soils to keep the vines well drained and stressed. This reduces yields and increases flavour concentration in the wines, while vineyards at high altitudes keep the temperatures in check as do cooling coastal breezes. However, the very best place to grow vines on this island is Mount Etna in the east. Its fascinating black, volcanic soils coupled with a wide divergence between day and night-time temperatures results in very high quality fruit. All the more surprising, leaving aside the occasional, off-putting eruption, that so few vines are grown there. Its heyday was at the turn of the 19th century, when France was importing much wine from there. Then phylloxera arrived and most of the vineyards never recovered. Old friend and master winemaker Maurizio Biscardo was the one to spot this top-class parcel of grapes and put his winemaker Mirella Lombardo to work at his new Sicilian winery.
